Tall Black Guy could easily be referred to as your beatmaker’s favorite beatmaker. Terrel Wallace is someone whose art I’ve admired for years.

A decade ago, the multi-talented producer released his pivotal debut LP 8 Miles to Moenart, and today our friends at First Word Records are set to release its 10th Anniversary edition of the album which features two brand new live jazz interpretations of “From Home To Work, And Back”.

I love the reprise of “From Home to Work, and Back” and the aerial feeling it exhales. The whole production sounds very vast, adding a sense of extra freedom to its jazz improvisation essence.

8 Miles to Moenart marked a full-circle moment for Tall Black Guy, returning him to his roots. Detroit, where his musical journey began, served as the inspiration for this debut album. Blending low-slung hip-hop, downtempo house, and jazz-infused street soul, the record is a focused and immersive experience. It captures Detroit’s rich musical heritage through the lens of Tall Black Guy’s distinct sound.

Tall Black Guy elaborates, “I made the bulk of this album back in Detroit around 2012/2013, before I relocated to the UK. I’ve been back living and working in the States for a while now, and it’s great to look back on this project. But while it’s nice to reminisce, it’s important to look forward, so I wanted to include something new here to represent my progression as an artist, so there’s some new versions included, that I created with the help of some jazz musician friends of mine.”
