Meduulla came on my radar last year, thanks to a feature on CHERISE’s Butter, which made it on our The 100 Best Albums of 2024 selection. Undeniably a name we should all be talking about, all the time, simply because we’re witnessing real-time the birth of the next UK rap star.

I’ve been unhealthily obsessed with her debut album, Tabula Rasa, and the very least I had to share at least a track from that record, following Nasko’s “Rule No.1” feature from a few weeks ago. The whole album, produced alongside talented beatmaker Ethan Hill, is a statement of intent – a blend of sharp lyricism, honesty, and vision that cements her as one of Europe’s most exciting rap voices right now. Born in Manchester with deep Zimbabwean roots, Meduulla channels her experience as a first-generation immigrant into potent, reflective artistry, making this record such an eye-opening experience. I’m deeply aware that these experiences differ greatly from my own upbringing, which makes it all the more important for me to immerse myself in this record lyrically.

“Melanin Monroe ” is a song that feels like an universe. Built on Afro-diasporic sonic inspirations, rhythms, and aesthetics with laid-back psychedelic vibe, all of which wrapped in a layer of jazz harmonies and 70s soul energy. Meduulla’s sharp-as-razor delivery, blended with ROZZZQWEEN’s vocal is a combination that will allure anyone. Listening to the track feels like a trip back in time and it makes me eager to know more about the heritage, culture and music of Zimbabwe and the African continent as a whole.
