Chicago-native drummer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Luke Titus is someone whose music leaves an instant mark on listeners. I first stumbled upon his name because of his 2023 collab with Kiefer “Head Trip”, which was part of It’s OK, B U, but I’m glad we get to spotlight his solo work today.
Sonically, “Above Us” reminded me of the joy I experienced the first time I heard quickly, quickly’s The Long and Short of It, because of Luke’s vocal timbre and the unique blend of indie and bedroom pop with a subtle psychedelic funk influence. With parts of the lyrics that include “Rain on these eyes, but there’s no time” and “We’ll all return to the soil,” Titus prompts listeners to reflect on life’s fleeting nature. I find the song extremely emotional and definitely fell in love with the nostalgia that stems from it. The perfect soundtrack to a long drive to a place you cherish.
The song is paired with a visually captivating video set in the desert, featuring Luke and his band delivering a dynamic performance.
