Lots has happened since 2016 when I first discovered Late June and it has been rewarding to see Sonny’s growth and sound evolution over the years while preserving that special thread of his music. The thing that always evoked a special and sometimes hard to put into words feeling of lonesome empowerment in listeners.
The New Zealand-based artist recently announced his upcoming LP Mending, scheduled for release in December, and unveiled a new single part of the upcoming project. Today’s spotlight shines on “Focus” – a beautiful and mindful blend of chilled house music, glazed by the late-night effect of Late June’s music I mentioned in the previous paragraph.
What I appreciate about the track is the throbbing kicks that feel beautifully juxtaposed with the gentle piano keys and the vocal chops used to enhance the experience. A track about staying true to yourself, avoid overstressing and overpressuring, and keep showing up. That’s what I tell myself every day.
