Mantis Ensemble is a new Edinburgh-based groove jazz project led by drummer Scott Jamieson, and the influences of Yussef Dayes, Braxton Cook, and BADBADNOTGOOD definitely shine through his work. Clocking in at 7 minutes, “Umbra” is a sonic journey that has moments that are melodically brilliant and rhythmically captivating. The keys seemlessly float across the woozy synths while Scott’s thunderous rhythm section anchors the track with a driving force that keeps the energy pulsing throughout.
