With “Umbra”, Mantis Ensemble explores a boundary-pushing fusion of jazz, electronic, and funk that delivers a truly engaging sonic journey.
Mantis Ensemble is a new Edinburgh-based groove jazz project led by drummer Scott Jamieson, and the influences of Yussef Dayes, Braxton Cook, and BADBADNOTGOOD definitely shine through his work. Clocking in at 7 minutes, “Umbra” is a sonic journey that has moments that are melodically brilliant and rhythmically captivating. The keys seemlessly float across the woozy synths while Scott’s thunderous rhythm section anchors the track with a driving force that keeps the energy pulsing throughout. It’s really tough to know what to expect next on “Umbra” as the ensemble acquaints listeners with a range of pleasant surprises.
